How the scanner works
Your photo is matched against a database of Pokemon cards by set, number, and artwork, then priced against recent sales. You get the raw (ungraded) market value plus what PSA 10 and PSA 9 copies actually sell for — the gap between those is the whole grading decision.
Why population matters
Population is how many copies PSA has ever graded, and what share came back a 10. A card with a low gem rate is harder to grade well, so its PSA 10 carries a premium. A card where almost everything grades a 10 usually doesn't.
Tips for a good scan
Fill the frame with just the card. Shoot straight on rather than at an angle. Avoid glare on holo cards — angle the card slightly away from the light instead of shooting through the reflection. Sleeves and toploaders are fine.
